a speaker stand from the dudero floor lamp
kevin takes the dudero floor lamp as a base for a speaker stand. here are his step-by-step instructions.
1. take the lamp stand out of the box (it is partially assembled).
2. remove the electrical parts using pliers. the wiring will need to be cut and the plastic pieces removed.
3. reassemble the stand just like a lamp.
4. use the coat hanger to feed the speaker wire through the lamp. there are holes in the lamp stand near the top and bottom for this. you can either tie or tape the wire to the hanger.
5. place the bracket on the top of the lamp stand and secure it using the threaded piece on the top of the lamp.
6. mount the speaker (depending on how yours is made). i simply needed two washers, two nuts, and a screw to hang the speakers.
7. admire your finished product!

Buy yourself a decent pair of speaker s which come with stands already, or simply use the wall and a screw.
Why waste a lamp for only one speaker!! For a 5.1 System you need 5 Lamps.....

This would look great if you put the lamp shade back on the assembly.
We rent a home where we cannot screw our speakers (or anything else) into the wall, so I would consider this. Speaker stands are made out of the same materials for 3 times the price.
Looks kinda lightweight.
How is it a "waste"? The lamp is cheaper than most speaker stands you can buy.

We had an old ikea lamp with a shade that has had a small hole punched into it for years (probably bought it in like 2001). this would have been the perfect use for it. however, the new dudero doesn't match it and we need a pair. So, ended up buying two dudero lamps anyway and hacking as you so brilliantly suggest in this article. They work great, and the base seems much heavier then my old floor lamp.
If anyone is worried about them looking too light, you will probably be surprised by the weight of the base, feels acceptably sturdy to me.
Unfortunately, I am still stuck with this old lamp with the busted shade (haven't tried to fit one of the new shades to it yet)
I did have trouble finding a bracket with a hole big enough for the screw that goes into the top, would love to know what you are using/where you found it. we ended up using a hinge, it was the only thing we could find at the hardware store that had a big enough hole. it works, but your's looks better.
This ikea hack is great - I just went and got myself some Dudero's today and had two speaker stands within minutes.
I actually assembled mine at 3/4 of the full height - one of the 4 sections that makes up the lamp can be discarded, if you feel that the normal height is too high (as I did).
Thanks for this hack, it's saved me a lot of time and money and tidyed up my lounge as well! :)
Some of the comments on this page are snyde, bitchy and unkind - and totally uncalled for. So you don't care for the hack that's proposed. Big deal. But spare us your nastiness. The people who come up with these hacks are creative, clever and seem to have a fun perspective. I see these ideas as great brainstorming session: some are impractical but fun, others are downright ingenious and actually promote other ideas for the rest of us. Kuddos for the ones that try and "get bent" for the dullards that complain.
People posting comments need to calm down. The lamp is $17. Ever bought a speaker stand? Believe me - the cheap ones are at least $30. This is a worthwhile hack. Blogazar is lame.
Oh yeah, and the stand is really nice and heavy, perfect for speakers.
