I disagree with the premise - there are tons of quality speaker stands out there, many for less than the cost of this hack. Further, many speaker stands incorporate internal ballasts which you can fill with sand or lead shot to make them heavier and thus more sonically stable. Many also have internal routing for the speaker wire.
These look like they could tip over easily.
This hack makes a neat little table, which would be just "ok" as a speaker stand. It'd be better for a plant or vase imho.

I think they look as stable as the ones shown in the picture. Besides, weight and stability is much more important in a tall speaker stand, used for appropriate applications or larger speakers. If you have small speakers, or your TV and couch are low to the ground, or they're going on a table or desk, there's little need for a lot of weight. Some felt or rubber pads on the bottom of the legs would also eliminate any vibrations. And if you're not an audiophile, then you shouldn't even care about it. I give this one two thumbs up.
Oh, and by the way, the only speaker stands you could get for the price of this hack are boring silver painted ones - nothing like these, much less the genuine luxury ones the hack is modeled after. Excellent hack!
