Knock on this door if you need a computer desk

Jonas wanted a new look for his old Galant desk and found this high-gloss alternative. Looks way cool.

He says, "I didn't wanted to use my old (Galant) desk top so searched for an alternative. I found a high gloss cabinet door for the Pax cabinet system for 20€. As table legs I reused my old ones from the (Galant) table.

So I needed something to widen the table in depth I used two (Lack) racks. Installed them just above so there would be enough place to hide the cables and so on. I plan to put some lights under the racks but haven't found time yet."

Have you trued an optical Mouse on the surface?

That's awesome, but what about ppl who don't have spare legs? :/ Any good ideas?

I see there's some speakers on it. Would you guess that it's sturdy enough, considering that a door isn't really meant to bear all that much weight?

Yes it is able to bear the weight optical mouse wont work and for those with no spare legs try cabinets on each side I ve added two afterwards though the wood will bend without support

You spend 5 grand on apple sh!t and then balk at the desk?

I did this with one of the spare doors that they have in the as-is department! if you get one that has a recessed piece go to the hardware store and have them cut you a piece of ply wood or mdf that fits in the recessed part perfectly, attach your legs to that and drop the top on. I actually took on of the new vika lilleby (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50107471) legs, sawed it in half and screwed it into my inset piece. super sturdy desk for 20 bucks (and fun too bc the top is kelly green)

What particular PAX door is the glossy white one? Hard to tell from their online catalogue.

i've got pax lomen doors on my media unit and they look the same as these.

hi, nice hack, but is this door thick enough to sustain a 24 inch monitor weight?

Jonas Gordon said...

yes it is because of the leg system that supports the door on three points at the ends and the middle part

Well for twenty Euros it wouldn't be hard using two cabinet doors and placing 'em one over the other. And presto, it can hold stuff now :)

Any glossy BLACK cabinets in mind? ;)

What'd you use to put underneath the speakers?

I now own the Ikea Galant desk system that uses these same legs. The frame you buy with the leg system makes the desk strong enough to support my 200 pounds (as I replaced a fallen curtain behind it)

I love my Ikea system but had been using hollow core doors as desks and tables for the last 25 years. They will support computers, speakers, books, sewing machines and small televisions.

Looks great !

You can buy tubular screw-on legs from ikea for AUD$5. I bought an as-is big cabinet wall for $3 and 5 legs (one for the middle to prevent sag), and I had me a large work table.

By using the PAX door, does that mean the actual desk is only 50cm deep? I really like the idea but wonder if that will be enough for me and my 24" monitor.

You could also potentially add the Goliat drawer unit (take off the casters) to give added support and have drawers. It comes in white too, or you can paint it to whatever color you want. It may be too short though, I haven't really tried it out.

Responding to the comment from Anonymous:"You spend 5 grand on apple sh!t and then balk at the desk?"

Perhaps the reason why he can afford the expensive computer equipment is because he doesn't waste his money buying needlessly expensive furniture.

Nice job on the desk! I'd like to know how the high-gloss surface is holding up over time. Scratches?

So what type of door is this? Pax Lomen or is it something else?

Horoscopes said...

this is brilliant idea, lol, i think i might do the same

The high gloss has some scratchers now but you can hardlysee them....only when it is exposed to direct sunlight ....yes it is pax lomen and yes this is how iam able to spend 5 grand on apple products

GREAT!
How thick is the Pax door? Is it suitable for table legs that are meant for tabletops with more than 3cm?

Play nice. Be appreciative of another's efforts. Don't say anything that you won't say in front of your mom or daughter.
