iMac computer desk

Gérard from The Netherlands has a sleek solution for his iMac.

"My Apple iMac obstructed our dinner table for a year. My wife did not make much of it. To please her I did a little Ikea hacking. I bought a Ludvig Laptop shelf/charging station. And a Ludvig Router/modem wall cabinet. I used the wall cabinet as computer stand and the laptop shelf for my keyboard and mouse. Both Ludvigs have nice compartments for various stuff (Hard drives, headset, DVD’s etc.) The set is complemented with a Vitamin stool. When not in use the shelf is put to rest and the computer is not in the way. I think it is a nice hack and my wife is pleased. Mission accomplished."

AWESOME!!! I love this, so nice and neat looking, and has both the floating & built in feel-- almost makes me want to run out and buy a Mac!

Nice idea, but I am wondering if the respective height of the stool and of the keyboard make it comfortable to use. Any feedback on that ?

It seems very uncomfortable. Very nice, but uncomfortable.

Wow. Nice. Fits the look. :D

Does it support the new 27" model? I'm a little concerned about weight limits.

This is really sharp!

Thanks for the compliments. Sitting is very comfortable. Ofcourse it is not ment for allday computing. It's our "lounge" solution. The 27" model would fit also. Weight is not a problem. You could sit on it. It's bolted strongly.

Wow! This is so lovely. You've extended the minimalist design of the iMac to your workspace. Absolutely love it.

you should check out a site called lockerz.com. Its a site where you get $2 for signing in daily, and $2 for answering a daily question. But you have to be invited. email me at lockerz306@yahoo.com to get an invitation. The invitations are very difficult to get. Oh, I need 20 invitations, so can you post this comment on your blog to help me out? Thanks!

love the setup. one thing i'm confused about...
when i follow the link, the ikea laptop station has long support brackets on the bottom. did you modify it? how is it adequately supported without those brackets?

Jesse said...

I love that the bottom shelf is floating. When I go to IKEA though, it has an ugly leg. How did you get away with not using the leg?

Anonymous said...

The leg was indeed ugly. I dumped it. It is not necessary. I used bigger bolts to fix it to the wall. It is more than strong enough without the bracket. Cheers Gérard...

absolute perfection.

where did you get that background for your screen? I LOVE it!

Anonymous said...

The background is a standard background of Apple OSX Snow Leopard. Gérard...

I am wondering why you didn't make it so that the chair could slide underneath the table when not in use? Does that make the table too high for comfortable use?

Anonymous said...

The chair is pressured. You can go up or go down. So it is possible to fit it under the table. No problem. Feedback? twitter.com/wurkflow

Brilliant! At organize-more-stress-less.com I am always looking for new and better ways to minimize clutter and best use space. This is absolutely awesome. I'll be sending some folks your way.

Awesome work! Looking at that, I'm wondering if perhaps it could even be done without the laptop stand underneath. When in use, the front panel of the router cabinet could be left open to provide a platform for the keyboard and mouse. Since the Apple stuff is so small, they could maybe be stowed inside when not in use?

Ben said...

Thanks for this, Gerard. Great setup.

What sort of brackets does the router box come with and what bolts did you use to attach it to the wall.

I'm looking into a 27" iMac for the family and this looks like it might be a good solution, but like another commenter, I'm concerned about the weight, since the 27" weighs almost 14kg (31lbs). Expansion bolts?

Anonymous said...

uhh. My house has concrete/stone wall's. So any thick bolt will do. Weightwise no problem here.

Cheers - Gérard

I love this design! I'm wondering about the viewing height of the monitor though... Do you find that you are looking up a lot? Where would eye-level be relative to the screen?

computerworkstationdesk said...

This computer desk is great, it's so small you can put it almost everywhere!

Dave said...

I think what I am going to do is get the laptop shelf to put the keyboard on, and get the wall mount kit for the iMac in lieu of the router cabinet. I think that would clean things up even more. I'm just wondering if there is enough room in the laptop shelf compartment to store a backup drive? The storage space of the router cabinet would be nice but I'm wondering if I can get away without it.

Play nice. Be appreciative of another's efforts. Don't say anything that you won't say in front of your mom or daughter.
